Brood and Honey
Last evening we felt the warmth returning A southern wind illumined a blue sky Bringing news of Summer The sky was grand, Wisps of clouds stood before us all And the sun broke treeline, descending To awaken another horizon Winds blew, sweeping the fields The forest swayed in rhythm Danced their unfurling wings To sail out beyond their winter limbs Though the pastures grasp a drought still Red blossoms holding The prayer for fruit, tightly Awaiting more rain It is the bees who thunder In the bees who are making lightning Demanding the rains They’ve charged up each hive and frame Queen cells being built No more room to wait A split I’ve made before the swarms I’m sticking it out Teach me your faith Brood and honey More and more splits made Colonies spreading Like green waves in a pasture Meeting the newest keepers Summoning the land that is Still here And they do not wait for your Readiness or your welcome Your preparedness is no match Queens are being born, now That is true for me too Not waiting for the heavens Or a God to absolve me I am here meeting the gods Still being born Even now A frame in a hive A peanut closed with a queen inside Threading silk A womb of everything before us My faith in a bee to be To fly outside her hive For a moment to mate Demanding the rain For us all to bloom And be kissed A thousand more times
